A little research showed that this version of Nougat was indeed current, and was receiving monthly security updates. Furthermore, the developer responds to inquiries in his XDA user forum quite promptly — quite a novelty for this web site! I downloaded the LineageOS Rebooting did indeed bring the phone up in Android Nougat.
Root Checker now indicates that root was successfully installed. With the system setup more or less complete, I could install Quick Reboot and my other preferred apps.
